Professional Development Week of Learning

The Professional Development Team’s Week of Learning takes place in the first week of April. Every day there will be opportunities to attend a number of Lunch and Learn sessions on a variety of topics or experience a coaching taster session. The team will be holding events at Mile End, Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square Campuses, so please come and join us at any of the events that interest you.

Lunch and Learn: Bring your lunch if you wish and enjoy a bite size session on a topic that interests you. No need to book; just turn up on the day. All QMUL staff welcome.

Coaching Tasters: We’d like to offer all QMUL staff the chance to attend a twenty minute coaching taster session, to help identify how coaching could support your career goals. Contact our team email address to book:  profdev@qmul.ac.uk.

For full details, including the schedule in a text format, see the CAPD’s website: http://capd.qmul.ac.uk/news/professional-development-week-of-learning/

There is a poster attached to this email that you can display in staff areas of your department if you wish to promote the opportunities available.

Share your story: Recruitment, Mentoring and Cyber and Information Security

We are currently creating online support areas for any staff involved in recruitment of other staff; mentoring other members of staff or being mentored; ensuring the security of information they store online. We’re keen to include some viewpoint type items as part of the support material, where colleagues with experience of the topic can share their experiences, helpful hints or even cautionary tales with others who may face similar situations. Examples might include:

  • How being/having a mentor helped me
  • What I did when my relationship with my mentor/mentee wasn’t going well
  • A useful technique I use for effective interviewing
  • We didn’t get the job description quite right and it was difficult to recruit a suitable candidate
  • What happened when my password was stolen
  • A solution we came up with to keep data more secure in my team

We could do this in text, audio or video format, according to your preference and would be happy to present your tale either with your name attached or anonymously. If you feel you may be able to contribute, please get in touch with Joanne-Marie Fowler via email: j.fowler@qmul.ac.uk, who is coordinating setting up the support areas and can discuss how best to present your information.

If you are interested in having access to any of the support areas when they are complete, please also get in touch with Joanne-Marie Fowler via email: j.fowler@qmul.ac.uk and you can be added to the expression of interest list and given access at the earliest opportunity.

Featured Course: Recruitment and Interview Selection Refresher

This course is suitable for anyone who participates in the recruitment of new colleagues as part of their role and has already received the full training on Recruitment and Selection within the last three years.

Recruiting and selecting a new member of staff to a role is one of the most important decisions that a manager takes. Appointing the right person makes an enormous difference to team performance, working relationships and the effectiveness of the university, which has implications for its reputation and financial stability. Whilst no one sets out to recruit the wrong person, with the benefit of hindsight, sometimes the decisions we take during the process can feel like the wrong ones.

The aim of this course is to support recruiting managers in acquiring and maintaining the knowledge and skills to recruit in a way that follows university procedures, meets the legal requirements and maximises the chances of recruiting the best person for the job.

If you are interested in attending, please:
