12:30-13:30, Thursday 9 November, Scape 0.14
Dr M Hasan Shaheed QMUL National Teaching Fellow 2017 will lead the first in a new series of Academic Development Seminars on the subject of ‘Research-teaching integration’. The seminar takes place on Thursday 9 November, 12:30-13:30 in Scape 0.14. Dr Shaheed was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship – the most prestigious award for excellence in HE teaching – for his outstanding contribution in student-centred learning, research-led teaching and supervision of a diverse range of award winning student projects. Widely recognised in higher education in the UK and internationally, the National Teaching Fellowships Scheme celebrates individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student learning and promoted excellence in teaching.
On receiving the news, Dr Shaheed said, ‘I am thrilled and honoured to have been recognised at the national level for my effort to make learning student-centred, exciting and research-led. I feel privileged to have been nominated for this award by the university and finally to be named by the HEA among the eminent academics given the award this year. This has only been possible due to the wonderful support from outstanding colleagues at all levels and amazing students in a vibrant learning environment at Queen Mary. Over the years, I have been hugely inspired by the comments received from students. What could be more satisfying and fulfilling for a teacher than students stopping him/her on the corridor, or on the way to and from lecture rooms just to say that they have understood the subject matter of the lectures delivered? I look forward to building on my achievements and working with students and colleagues in developing teaching excellence using research outcomes as a major component.”
On hearing the news, QMUL’s outgoing Principal Simon Gaskell congratulated Dr Shaheed saying “Dear Hasan, I have just heard the excellent news that you are to receive a National Teaching Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy – many congratulations! Your contributions to teaching at QMUL, alongside your research achievements and success in enterprise activities, are inspirational. Thank you!”
