WellMed 18 – Shaping the undergraduate curriculum to promote wellbeing, wisdom and resilience
Professor Ania Korszun, Centre for Psychiatry, Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine.
Physicians all over the world are suffering from increasing rates of burnout and stress. This can result in poorer and less safe health care delivery and also poses serious health risks for physicians themselves.
Stress begins at an early stage in a doctor’s career and high levels of distress and mental health problems have been reported in medical students. On the other hand, students who have the highest levels of resilience, i.e. the ability to bounce back after stress, show the most positive mental health.
Yet, it is only relatively recently that it has been recognized that preparing medical students for the work place, in terms of building their resilience and promoting their wellbeing should be formally incorporated in the medical curriculum. Self-care is an important component of Medical Professionalism and it is a stipulation of the General Medical Council that “ as well as supporting students who have mental health conditions, medical schools should also promote well-being among all of their students.
At Barts and The London Medical School, we are introducing a new curriculum (WellMed 2018) aimed at promoting resilience and wellbeing in medical students and several modules have already been successfully piloted. WellMed fits well with the aims of the QMUL model and work is underway to adapt and roll out WellMed modules to all QMUL students.
